As citizens and designers, we're intrigued by how urban planning's linearity affects our lives. We aim to discover humane and sustainable living solutions within urban design's strict boundaries. Intimacy with vitamin
The word vitamin has been introduced since the late nineteenth century, existing and regulated as “neither food nor drugs” (Nichter, M. and Thompson, 2006). More importantly, there is a clear and significant disconnect between how people practice supplement and the official discourse(GERKE, Barbara, 2012). Under this context, my research will be focusing on how critical design can integrate the advertised culture of vitamin and supplement implanting the ideology of sufficient and healthy lifestyle. How does it reveal and influence the future of living and their relationship with food and nutrients? From researching more about different consumers of supplements, the industry and factorial side of supplements, I discovered an explicit split between the product purpose and consumer perception of vitamins. Therefore, the functionality of supplement and its visual representation navigate me into creating a more comprehensive and less purpose-led presentation of vitamin, instead the more explorative and compound narrative about supplements.

During my November visit to Xiangtan in Hunan province, China, I was struck by the immense betel nut industry, generating billions despite its humble beginnings. Everywhere, locals were seen chewing betel nuts, a habit so common it's stained the streets—a sight I witnessed at a seaside market, where betel juice created pools of a blood-like liquid. Sanitation workers were busy cleaning it up, indicating a divide between urban and suburban habits. Yet, the widespread use of betel nuts, despite the severe health risks like oral cancer and dental issues, puzzled me. It's clear that for Xiangtan's residents, the cultural norm of betel chewing overshadows the economic and health consequences.

I traced back into my memories while living in Canada and tried to visualize my impression of the city of Vancouver and Canadians. Comparing with the lifestyle of stereotypical Chinese people, the obvious difference between my personality using English and Chinese sparks my interests in discovering how culture and language differences can influence people's behaviours and ego projection.
